Understanding Birth Trauma
A birth does not have to look traumatic to someone else for it to have felt frightening or overwhelming to you. You may have felt unsafe, unheard, powerless, rushed, or disconnected from decisions. Afterwards, memories of the birth can remain vivid or difficult to approach.
Some people experience flashbacks, nightmares, anger, guilt, numbness, avoidance, or anxiety about medical settings. Others struggle with the gap between how they expected birth to feel and what actually happened. Fear of childbirth can also become especially intense after a previous difficult experience.
Therapy offers a place to tell the story in your own way and in your own time. The aim is not to force you to relive the experience, but to help you understand its impact, feel more grounded, and make space for the emotions that followed.
What You Might Be Experiencing
Responses to a difficult or traumatic birth can be physical, emotional, relational, or hard to name. You might recognize some of these.
Flashbacks or intrusive memories
Fear or hypervigilance
Anger about what happened
Numbness or disconnection
Avoidance of reminders or medical settings
Fear of a future birth

How Therapy Can Help
A Free Consultation
We begin with a free 15-minute phone consultation. It is a chance to share what has been happening, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no pressure to commit.
Support Shaped Around You
We can explore the birth experience itself, the emotions that followed, fears about childbirth, and the effect on relationships, parenting, or future pregnancy. You remain in control of what you discuss and when.
Space to Reassess
Therapy is not a fixed process. As our work develops, we can notice what is helping, make room for what has changed, and adjust our approach so that your sessions continue to reflect what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can therapy help after a traumatic birth?
Therapy offers a confidential place to process the emotional impact of birth, understand trauma responses, and explore what may help you feel more grounded. You decide how much of the experience you want to discuss and at what pace.
Can therapy help with fear of childbirth?
Yes. Fear may arise before a first birth or after a previous difficult experience. Therapy can help you understand what is driving the fear, make space for uncertainty, and approach decisions about pregnancy and birth with more support.
Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?
No. Therapy can be useful before things feel unmanageable. You may simply want a private place to process what is happening, understand your reactions, make a difficult decision, or feel less alone with an experience that is taking up a lot of emotional space.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Sessions are held online via secure telehealth. Mindy works with clients who are located in New York and New Mexico.
