Understanding Motherhood & Identity
Becoming a mother can change the way you see yourself, even when motherhood was deeply wanted. Roles, routines, relationships, work, your body, and the amount of time that belongs to you may all feel different. It can be unsettling to love your child and still miss parts of your previous life or identity.
You may feel pressure to know instinctively what to do, to enjoy every stage, or to put your own needs last. Questions about career, independence, partnership, friendship, sexuality, values, and future plans can become more complicated as your identity continues to evolve.
Therapy creates room for these conversations without reducing you to a role. We can explore the person you were, the person you are becoming, and how to make space for both motherhood and the other parts of yourself that still matter.
What You Might Be Experiencing
Identity shifts in motherhood can show up in many ways. You might recognize some of the following.
Feeling unlike yourself
Loss of independence
Career or work uncertainty
Changing priorities
Guilt about your own needs
Pressure to be a 'good' mother

How Therapy Can Help
A Free Consultation
We begin with a free 15-minute phone consultation. It is a chance to share what has been happening, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no pressure to commit.
Support Shaped Around You
Together, we can explore identity, values, boundaries, work, relationships, confidence, and the expectations surrounding motherhood. The goal is not to return to an old version of yourself, but to understand what matters to you now.
Space to Reassess
Therapy is not a fixed process. As our work develops, we can notice what is helping, make room for what has changed, and adjust our approach so that your sessions continue to reflect what you need.
What to Expect
A Calm, Confidential Space
My sessions offer a private, nonjudgmental space to talk openly about what you are experiencing, giving you time to explore difficult feelings and whatever feels most important to you.
Online Sessions
Sessions are 50 minutes and take place online via secure telehealth. This can make regular support easier to access from a familiar, private space without adding travel to an already demanding time.
Your Pace, Not a Deadline
There is no standard timetable for adjusting after birth. Sessions give you consistent space to process anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, relationship changes, and whatever feels most important to you.
Why Work With Mindy
My approach is down to earth, collaborative, and compassionate, and I am LGBTQIA+ affirmative. I draw on more than 15 years of experience in counseling and human services, alongside contemplative and relational psychotherapy, mindfulness-based tools, and other approaches. I do not expect your experience to fit a template. We shape therapy together around your history, relationships, values, and what feels most important now.
I believe therapy works best when you feel understood as a whole person, not reduced to a diagnosis, symptom, or difficult chapter in your life. My role is to create a thoughtful, supportive space where we can explore what you are experiencing at a pace that feels right for you. Together, we can make sense of patterns, emotions, and experiences while finding ways forward that feel meaningful and sustainable in your everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can therapy help with identity after becoming a mother?
Therapy can help you explore changes in identity, independence, work, relationships, values, and confidence. It offers space to consider what motherhood means to you without losing sight of the rest of who you are.
Is it normal to miss my life before motherhood?
Many people experience grief or ambivalence alongside love for their child. Missing aspects of your previous life does not cancel out how you feel about your family. Therapy can provide a place to explore both without judgment.
Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?
No. Therapy can be useful before things feel unmanageable. You may simply want a private place to process what is happening, understand your reactions, make a difficult decision, or feel less alone with an experience that is taking up a lot of emotional space.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Sessions are held online via secure telehealth. Mindy works with clients who are located in New York and New Mexico.
