Understanding the Postpartum Period

The postpartum period can contain love, relief, fear, exhaustion, grief, joy, resentment, and uncertainty, sometimes within the same day. The reality of caring for a baby may feel very different from what you expected, while sleep, routines, relationships, work, and your sense of independence are all changing at once.

Anxiety or depression can develop after birth, but you do not need a diagnosis to find this period difficult. You may be dealing with intrusive thoughts, constant worry, low mood, irritability, loneliness, relationship strain, or doubts about whether you are doing enough.

Therapy gives you somewhere to speak honestly without needing to perform gratitude or confidence. We can focus on the parts of postpartum life that are taking up the most space and help you find ways to feel more supported within a major transition.

What You Might Be Experiencing

Postpartum experiences vary widely. You may recognize one or several of the following, or something different altogether.

Persistent worry or anxiety

Low mood or loss of interest

Overwhelm and exhaustion

Intrusive thoughts

Relationship changes

Self-doubt about parenting

How Therapy Can Help

A Free Consultation

We begin with a free 15-minute phone consultation. It is a chance to share what has been happening, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no pressure to commit.

Support Shaped Around You

Support can focus on postpartum anxiety or depression, intrusive thoughts, adjustment to life with a baby, relationship changes, parenting confidence, and the pressure to meet expectations about how this period should feel.

Space to Reassess

Therapy is not a fixed process. As our work develops, we can notice what is helping, make room for what has changed, and adjust our approach so that your sessions continue to reflect what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can therapy help during the postpartum period?

Therapy can help you understand and process anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, intrusive thoughts, relationship changes, and the adjustment to caring for a baby. It offers a place to be honest about experiences that may feel difficult to say elsewhere.

Do I need to have postpartum depression or anxiety to start therapy?

No. You do not need a diagnosis. Many people seek therapy because the transition itself feels difficult, relationships have changed, they feel unlike themselves, or they want support while adjusting to life with a baby.

Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?

No. Therapy can be useful before things feel unmanageable. You may simply want a private place to process what is happening, understand your reactions, make a difficult decision, or feel less alone with an experience that is taking up a lot of emotional space.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Sessions are held online via secure telehealth. Mindy works with clients who are located in New York and New Mexico.

How do I get started?

Get in touch to arrange a free 15-minute phone consultation. We can talk briefly about what brings you to therapy, what you are hoping for, and any questions you have before deciding whether to begin.
